Inspired by Japanese kumiko woodcrafting used for centuries to create intricate latticework screens, Kaleidoscope is a gleaming exploration of tessellations: patterns of shapes that fit perfectly together. We were intrigued by the way such designs can appear to fade in and out as they repeat in tiled forms. The traditional Asanoha motif (often used on kimono) was the starting point. Using our innovative molded technique, we adapted this abstract representation of hearty leaves by shifting the line weight across the openwork surface, creating a subtle ombré effect within each twelve-sided placemat.
