Brass ornaments Alexander Girard , 1952
The Girard Ornaments come in 5 characterful motifs, chosen by Vitra from the vast array of images created by Alexander Girard. Heart, Sun, Moon, Dove and Mouse are decorative pendants manufactured from metal with a polished brass finish. On his extensive travels Girard was inspired by folk art from around the world. He used the experience to recreate his own creations that have since become timeless and iconic items. The Sun motif is probably his best known and is available as a wall sculpture, a keyring and now a decoration. Although these objects would grace a seasonal tree perfectly, they can also be used all year round.
Along with his colleagues Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the leading figures in American design during the postwar era. While textile design was the primary focus of Girard's oeuvre, he was also admired for his work in the graphic arts as well as furniture, exhibition and interior design. Girard brought a sensuous playfulness to twentieth-century design that had been absent from the austere aesthetic of classic modernism.
