Post-Industrial Plastics
The definition
Post-industrial plastics are waste materials that have been accumulated during the manufacturing process, for example in the automobile industry. They have not been previously used by consumers and are purchased as a single type of plastic. Post-consumer plastics, on the other hand, left the factory as finished pieces of packaging and were purchased by consumers and subsequently disposed of via Germany’s ‘Yellow Bag’ system before being reprocessed into new raw material. The resulting recyclates comprise diverse types of plastics.

Vitra's commitment
Vitra prioritises the use of post-consumer plastics. If no post-consumer plastics are suitable for a specific product or component, Vitra checks whether a post-industrial recycling material could be a feasible alternative, favouring post-industrial waste from its own production sites. If it is not possible to use waste from its own operations, Vitra will seek alternatives in post-industrial materials from other production facilities. There are countless industrial processes around the world that generate scrap and waste material. Vitra is continually investigating them to identify material compositions that represent real recycling value and which also make ecological sense in terms of transport routes and manufacturing processes.
