Arabia Moomin mug Sliding is the winter seasonal mug of 2023. The illustration on the mug is based on Tove Jansson’s comic Moomin’s Winter Follies from 1955 as was the previous winter seasonal mug Winter Wonders from 2022. Sliding mug continues the same story and the pastel colored scheme.

Moomin family skips their annual hibernation tradition again as the ultimate sports nut Mr. Brisk arrives in Moominvalley and the Moomins decide to arrange the Moominvalley Winter Games. Mymble, who has a crush on Mr. Brisk, is able to beat her idol in a skiing contest with vigorous training. However, Mr. Brisk takes the defeat heavily and the Moomins let him win the next event against the walrus Edward. Stinky tells Mr. Brisk that his win was arranged and Mr. Brisk demands a rematch in a bobsleighing race. The hill collapses unders Edward’s weight, and they switch the race to skating. This is all too much for Edward as he decided to return home to the North Pole.

The illustration on the Sliding Moomin mug shows several different characters go down the hill with various styles. In addition to the more familiar characters, such as Moominpappa and Moomintroll, the mug features some of the lesser known characters like the walrus Edward and Shadow. This is the first time that walrus Edward features in a Moomin mug. Shadow however was featured in the winter seasonal mug Winter Bonfire in 2008. The Sliding collection was designed by Tove Slotte and includes a mug and a bowl.

Tove Slotte

Arabia’s Moomins are turned from stories to ceramic illustrations by designer Tove Slotte. She has been drawing Moomins onto Arabia items since the beginning of the 1990s. The designer draws inspiration from Tove Jansson’s original illustrations, which she adapts to ceramic shapes. The Moomins have always been close to Tove Slotte’s heart. She articulated the significance of the Moomins nicely when she said: I think everyone should enjoy a little dose of Moomin philosophy every day.
