Burning calendar candles is an originally Danish Christmas tradition. The advent candle is numbered from 1 (top) to 24 (bottom). The numbers symbolize the days before Christmas. Starting on December 1, a number of the candle is burned every day. By the time the candle runs out, it's Christmas!
